Rebuilding retired LEGO sets can be tricky, especially when certain parts are either no longer available or ridiculously expensive! After my visit to the LEGO House in Billund, I spotted the Peril in Peru Indiana Jones set in the museum. That’s when it hit me: I really regret not picking it up when I was younger. So, I decided to take on the challenge of rebuilding it using only new parts from BrickOwl stores. I focused on just the plane and the truck, skipping the cargo and the smaller truck. The minifigs you see here are originals from my collection from back in the day, buying them today would cost a small fortune.
Of course, this project came with a few challenges. Some parts were either unavailable in the right colors, overpriced, or just looked off without stickers (which I’ve never been a fan of and besides, they weren’t available anyway). The main parts I could get were the plane body elements (4195058 and 4293977) and the engine pieces (4289534 and 4512750). I also decided to add a rear wheel myself since the original plane design didn’t include one, and it just felt incomplete without it.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to rebuild the plane using pieces that are still available in 2025!
First of all, you are going to need the original instructions. You can get them here. On BrickOwl or BrickLink you can just look up the set and put the parts in a wishlist.
The roof I designed for my rebuilt Peril in Peru set is completely detachable from both the plane and the cargo area, making it way easier to slip minifigs inside. Honestly, I think this roof is an upgrade over the original. I prefer brick-build over stickers and the colors just fit better.
It's hard to land a plane with proper landing gear. That's why I added a retractable rear wheel on the plane. It just uses 7 extra pieces and you only have to remove 2 pieces.
First, remove the 2 arches. Colonel Dovchenko is showing which:
Then, build the gear you see below with the following pieces: 92409, 42610, 42136 / 32123, 2825 / 32006, 43093, 32062, 3700
The 2 round engine pieces were very hard to get in white for the 41531 / 77086 (left) and dark blue for the 60208 (right). From the available colors dark blue and medium stone gray seemed the most fitting. Our passengers are happy with it as you can see!
My main focus here was building the airplane. However, I really like cars and the truck isn't to costly to build in terms of costs of new bricks. With minimal substitutions I managed te rebuild it using all bricks you can get in in 2025! The only piece I could get in the right color (Dark green) is 6231. So instead in got it in dark stone gray. The other panel around the wheels (4865 / 26169) I also got in this color so it would still match.
And there you have it: your very own Peril in Peru, ready to take flight in 2025! It’s pretty interesting how a handful of current pieces can revive those classic Indy moments. Try this one out for yourself, happy building!
